Srinagar : A civilian was killed while six others were injured two of them critically when police opened fire on a group who were protesting against ‘transfer of Land to SASB’ and reported injuries to senior Hurriyat leader in down town area of the J&K’s summer capital, here this evening.
Informed sources told News Agency of Kashmir that a group of people from Nowhata down town area of the city came out of their homes after they heard that Senior Hurriyat leader Sayeed Shah Geelani was reportedly injured during a protest held in the afternoon.
Raising slogans against the government and in favour of the Hurriyat leader Ali Shah Geelani, sources told NAK that the protesters marched towards the city but were stopped by contingent of police and cops of CRPF 96 Battalion, who resorted to lathi charge to disperse the mob.
In the ding dong battle which lasted for more than half an hour several civilians were injured which added more fuel in the fire.
Police later fired several rounds towards the protesters killing a civilian on the spot.
The deceased has been identified as Feroz Ahmad rah son of Ghulam Mohd Rah of badam wari Srinagar.
Eye witnesses claimed that trooper started beated protesters which led to a clash between police and the protesters.
“Some of the CRPF cops of 96 Battalion resorted to lathi charge and later opened indiscriminate firing directly pointing barrel of their guns towards the protesters”, Ghulam Abass one of the protester told NAK. He said that a civilian received a bullet injury and died on the stop.
However another version of the story revealed that a stampede followed by the police firing and lathe charge, several civilians were injured, out of which one later succumbed to his injuries.
The official version could not be established immediately as no police officer was available for the comments.
Other injured civilians were immediately shifted to SKIMS where the doctors term their condition as stable.
