London : Former South African president Nelson Mandela arrived in London Monday for a week of events to celebrate his 90th birthday.
An outdoor music concert in honour of the former South African president, who turns 90 on July 18, is being held at Hyde Park on Friday.
Mandela was also reported to be also meeting British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and former US president Bill Clinton during his visit.
His concert coincides with the 20th anniversary of London’s Free Mandela concert, which was held to demand his release from prison.
He was freed in 1990 after 27 years behind bars, and was elected South Africa’s first black president in 1994.
The former president was previously in London last August, when he unveiled a statue of himself outside the British parliament to reflect his significance as a leading world statesman.
