Suicide blast kills 4 civilians in W Afghanistan

By Xinhua,

Kabul : A suicide attacker exploded his explosive-laden vehicle Monday afternoon as a foreign troops’ convoy was passing by in Shindand district of western Afghan province Herat, killing four civilians and wounding 12 others, a police official said.

The official, a spokesman for police department in western zone of Afghanistan who identified himself by Ahmadi, told Xinhua that the blast occurred at some 5 p.m. local time and was against the local-based foreign troops, but causing no casualties to the passing-by military convoy.

The Taliban, fighting the Afghan government and local-based international forces since being ousted from power in 2001, took the responsibility.

Press offices of both the U.S.-led Coalition forces and the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) while reached by Xinhua provided no related information.

The blast came as the past four weeks have seen rampant insurgency in terms of blasts and ambushes across the war-battered nation.

Clashes between the Taliban-led insurgents and Afghan forces backed by foreign troops surged sharply over the months.

As many as 8,000 people died in insurgency-related conflicts and violence in the country last year.
