Damascus : Visiting US Secretary department coordinator for Iraqi refugees Ambassador James Foley, has stressed his country’s commitment to ensuring Iraq’s national security.
Foley told reporters after talks with Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Al-Meqdad here today that talks have focused on the situation regarding Iraqi refugees in Syria.
The US official noted that his visit to Damascus comes amid the framework of a tour of countries in the region that started with a trip to Turkey and Jordan and will include Lebanon and ends in Geneva.
The aim of such visits is to assess refugees’ needs in the region, review means to assist the Iraqi refugees, Foley said.
The US diplomat praised the Syrian government and people for their hospitality of such a large number of Iraqi refugees, noting that the US recognize the difficulties that come with such task.
