The police opened fire Wednesday afternoon to disperse violent protesters who resorted to throwing stones at security forces at Mazhama, 29 km from here, on the Srinagar-Gulmarg road.

“One bullet hit a Class 12 student identified as Farooq Ahmed Rather. He was critically wounded and rushed to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries,” a police official said.

When the body of Rather reached Mazhama, angry villagers came out on the streets and shouted anti-government slogans.
