When humanity came to the fore in a strike!

By IANS,

Chandigarh : Even though thousands of rail and road passengers were harassed Wednesday during the strike by the Sikh community against Dera Sacha Sauda sect chief Gurmit Ram Rahim Singh, humanity too came to the fore at a few places in Punjab and Haryana.

Though the Sikh community activists were hell-bent on disrupting life Wednesday to seek the arrest of the controversial sect chief whose security guards killed a Sikh youth in Mumbai Friday, the Sikh community itself organised water and ‘langar’ (community kitchen) at a few places to provide relief to the stranded common people.

In Haryana’s Sirsa town, 300 km from here, Sikh community members stopped trains at the railway station but provided chilled water and langar to the stranded passengers.

Food and water was also served to stranded passengers in Ludhiana and a few other places in Punjab by volunteers of the community, particularly by local gurudwara managements.

“We are fighting for a cause against the Dera chief. But we don’t want common people to suffer much. So we made arrangements for langar and water,” said Bakshish Singh in Sirsa town.

However, stranded passengers rued that district authorities at most places in Punjab made no arrangements for water and food as they remained stuck for several hours during the strike.
