By Xinhua,

Kathmandu : Nepali Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala declared resignation Thursday afternoon at the Constituent Assembly (CA) meeting venue in the Nepali capital Kathmandu.

“The post of prime minister is not important for me. The most important thing is that all the political unite and work together to save the prestige of this country, to lead the peace process to a logical end and to draft the constitution within two years,” Koirala said.

He said that the Nepali political parties should move ahead with unity in the future, “the political parties’ unity must remain intact.”

Koirala also mentioned that he would tender his resignation letter to the republic’s president, who will be elected through the Constituent Assembly in the future.

The Nepali Interim Government was formed in April 2007 in accordance with the Interim Constitution, promulgated in January 2007 just after the Comprehensive Peace Accord was signed between the then ruling Seven-Party Alliance (SPA) and the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) (CPN-M) to end the decade-long civil war in November, 2006.

The 83-year-old Koirala, also holding the presidency of the Nepali Congress (NC), also led SPA government as the Prime Minister after the reinstatement of the House of Representatives on April 24, 2006 following the People’s Movement ending the former king Gyanendra’s direct rule.

The Constituent Assembly was formed on May 28 with tenure not more than two and half years.

In its first meeting on May 28, the CA declared the country a federal democratic republic, but the first president and the government formed in accordance with the CA election results have not come out.

At Thursday’s meeting, Koirala also urged the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) (CPN-M) to take the initiative to lead the formation of the new government.

CPN-M emerged as the single largest CA party with 220 seats won in the April 10 CA elections, followed by Koirala’s Nepali Congress with 110 and the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) with 103 seats.
