Islamabad : Pakistan’s supreme court on Monday adjourned for two weeks the hearing on a petition against ruling that barred former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif from standing in by-elections.
A full bench of the Lahore High Court disqualified Sharif from contesting the parliamentary by-elections last Wednesday.
But Pakistan Supreme Court, after receiving the appeal against the disqualification from the federal government, made the decision to postpone the by-election on Sharif’s constituency before it holds hearing on the case on June 30.
The hearing was adjourned as an objection lawyer named Ahmad Raza Kasuri argued that the federal government has no authority to file petition on Sharif’s disqualification, local Geo TV channel reported.
Sharif was barred from Feb. 18 general elections for the convictions related to the coup in 1999, in which then army chief Musharraf seized power.
