Kenya: Celebration and Caution

By Prensa Latina

Nairobi : Kenyans celebrate on Friday the pact reached between political rivals, President Emilio Mwai Kibaki and opponent Raila Odinga, as a first step was taken to comply with the agreement.

Happiness in the streets contrasted with the caution with which political analysis referred to the negotiation issue.

Opposition leader Raila Odinga was appointed prime minister of the government of greater coalition, as press reports have termed the coming executive, meaning institutional commitments.

Odinga said he will work on the reconstruction of this country and reconciliation of its inhabitants, as big gaps were opened in two months of political crisis, also boasting overtones of ethnic antagonisms.

In this context, it is obvious that restoration demands cooperation and political will from rival factions, as urged by the prime minister.

Political analysts, including Grace Mbugua, think that the crisis will not happen again: “chaos will end never again re-emerge,” he said.

But other people are more cautious, as just a few signs have appeared to guide the implementation of the agreement.

However, the pact means recognition for Mwai Kibaki, so far rejected as president by the opposition, as he should have admit its capacity as a crucial political force.

Porfolios will be divided equally between followers of Odinga and Mwai Kibaki, and two deputy prime ministers, one by each group, will be appointed.
