Moscow : Political analysts agree that the new elected Russian President Dmitry Medvedev will amend some of the country’s foreign policy.

Observers believe that Medvedev will include changes in the foreign policy towards the United States and Western Europe.

The newly-elected president is expected to lessen the severity in Russia’s confrontation with Washington on controversial issues and will work on promoting bilateral relations with it in all fields especially when it comes to combating terrorism, organized crime and preventing the spread of mass destruction weapons.

In Medvedev’s era, Russia will work on developing its relations with the European Union (EU) and may adopt a similar stance when solving regional issues such as the Iranian file, the situation in the Korean peninsula and the disputes in Abkhazia and southern Asetia.

Observers expect Russia to also promote its relations with Arab countries and the Islamic World and improve its ties with Israel.

The new president will not be able to neglect the Russian fixed stands towards the US missile shield crisis in Europe and the movement of the NATO’s military infrastructure towards the Russian border.

Russia has shown concern over any of the former Soviet republics’ willingness to join NATO particularly Georgia and the Ukraine because they have common borders with Russia.

It is true that Medvedev is reaching the Kremlin through former president Vladimir Putin’s declared support but he will not accept to remain long under his shadow and will strongly hold on to his independent political decisions.

Medvedev belongs to the generation of Russian liberal politicians who believe in free economy and is expected to offer liberal political groups interested in the West a larger margin of movement.

An exciting new political era is about to be revealed in Russia. The turnout of the elections was expected but the future may hold many surprises.
