Warsaw : Georgian President Mijail Saakashvili announced Monday in Warsaw that his country expects to be invited to Bucharest to begin negotiations to become a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
The military bloc will hold its next head of State meeting in the Romanian capital, April 2-4.
After meeting with Polish President Lech Kaczynski, the two held a joint press conference and the visitor said his two-day stay was due to Georgian interest in creating a coalition to support its entry to NATO.
Kaczynski confirmed that Poland supports Georgia’s aspiration to join NATO.
The Georgian president announced that with the same purpose, he would meet US President George W. Bush, who “strongly supports Georgia’s aspirations,” he asserted.
However, he admitted some of the 26 member countries will take some convincing of Erevan’s will to guarantee security of Georgia and the Caucasus region.
Russia is opposed to the eventual entry of the Caucasus Republic to NATO, which is one of the most marked differences in the relations between Moscow and NATO, NATO General Secretary Jaap de Hoop Scheffer admitted on Monday in Athens.
