UN officials avoid mention of Gaza, Swiss FM demands end of Israeli operation

By KUNA

Geneva : Both UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour failed, addressing the opening session of the 7th session of the Human Rights Council, to address the atrocities committed by the Israeli army in Gaza.

Up to date, since last Wednesday, 116 Palestinians were killed by the Israeli army, including many children and infants.

Ban Ki-Moon said that he has mobilized the entire UN family for the 60th anniversary campaign of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The UN Secretary-General recalling this important abstract event failed to mention anything on the plight of the Palestinian people under occupation and the Israeli military campaign over the past 6 days.

Meanwhile, Swiss Foreign Minister Micheline Calmy-Rey called for an immediate end of the current military operation in Gaza.

Calmy-Rey expressed deep concern on the deterioration of the human rights situation in the occupied Palestinian territories and loss of life in Gaza.

She added that her country expresses the same concern for the situation in Darfur, Myanmar, and Sri-Lanka.
