Thrissur (Kerala) : Veliyam Bhargavan was re-elected secretary of the Communist Party of India (CPI) state unit at the 20th state party conference here Tuesday.

This is the fourth time that Bhargavan has become party secretary in Kerala. The 80-year-old leader was first elected to the post in 1998. The meeting also constituted CPI’s 107-member state council with 18 new faces.

Addressing a press conference here later, Bhargavan said in a lighter vein: “I took up the post again as no one was willing to burden oneself with the responsibility.”

“There is total unity in the party and the situation in the state remains conducive for the growth of the party,” the CPI leader said.

He said that the state council would be convened March 14 and 15 to elect the secretariat and the executive council.

The four-day CPI state conference will conclude later Tuesday.
