Srinagar : A mild tremor rocked the Kashmir valley Thursday morning, forcing many residents to run out of their homes in panic.

“The tremor rocked the Kashmir valley at 4.28 a.m. today. It was of slight intensity measuring 3.9 on the Richter scale,” T.K. Jotshi, assistant director of the local weather office, told IANS here.

He said the epicentre was located in the Jammu and Kashmir division.

Many residents in the state’s summer capital Srinagar said they had rushed out of their homes when the ground shook under them.

“My 15-year-old son came rushing and said there was an earthquake. All of us rushed out of home,” said Mushtaq Ahmad, 47, who lives in the Lal Bazaar neighbourhood, 12 km from city centre Lal Chowk.

Residents of Anantnag and Pulwama districts in south Kashmir and Baramulla and Kupwara districts in north Kashmir also felt the tremor.

There are no reports of any loss of life or property so far.
