New Delhi : Several north Indian members of parliament (MPs) cutting across party-lines have demanded privilege proceedings against Shiv Sena chief Balasaheb Thackeray for making derogatory remarks against the house in his party mouthpiece Samana.

Led by Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Devendra Prasad Yadav, the members have written to Speaker Somnath Chatterjee demanding action against Thackeray under Rule 222 of the Code of Conduct of the Lok Sabha.

The letter to the speaker cited Thackeray’s write-up published in Marathi Wednesday.

The letter said, “We are attaching the comments of a regional leader of Maharashtra, Bal Thackeray, on the discussions in parliament and draw your attention to seek action against him for attacking our privilege.”

“Bal Thackeray has not only made objectionable remarks against all the members from north India, disgraced the freedom fighters but in effect attacked the prestige of this house,” the letter said.

The letter, signed by Devendra Yadav (RJD), Ilyas Azmi of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and 15 others, has sought the speaker’s ruling on their plea.
