Hamburg : Fiorentina, PSV Eindhoven, Glasgow Rangers and Bayern Munich are in line to advance to the quarterfinals of the UEFA Cup after scoring good victories in their first leg round of 16 matches.
Fiorentina beat Premiership club Everton 2-0, Rangers won against Bundesliga club Werder Bremen by the same score, while PSV Eindhoven came away from London with a 1-0 against Tottenham Hotspur Thursday.
The biggest victory on the night belonged to Bayern Munich though, who trounced Anderlecht 5-0 in Belgium.
There was also a good win for the only Spanish club remaining in the competition Getafe, who won 2-1 at Benfica Lisbon.
Benfica spent over 80 minutes playing with ten men against the La Liga team after Paraguayan striker Oscar Cardozo was shown a straight red card for a foul on David Belenguer.
Ruben de la Red and Pablo Hernandez scored for Getafe, while Angolan substitute Mantorras pulled one back for the home side late in the game.
In Florence coach David Moyes’ game plan seemed to have been working for Everton as the Premiership club held the Serie A side to a goalless draw for most of the game, but two goals in 11 minutes late in the match turned the tie in favour of Fiorentina.
Zdravko Kuzmanovic opened the scoring in the 70th minute, while Riccardo Montolivo added a second nine minutes from the end.
PSV Eindhoven beat Tottenham 1-0 with a well-taken first-half goal by Peruvian international Jefferson Farfan, which leaves the Premiership side with a mountain to climb if they want to advance to the quarterfinals.
In Glasgow Werder Bremen goalkeeper Tim Wiese gifted Rangers two goals shortly before and after the break. Daniel Cousin opened the scoring in first-half injury time with a long-range effort that slipped through Wiese’s hands, while three minutes after the restart Wiese pushed another Cousin shot straight to the feet of Steven Davis who made no mistake.
An all-German clash between Leverkusen and SV Hamburg ended in a 1-0 victory for the home side Bayer Leverkusen, for whom Theofanis Gekas scored the only goal in the 77th minute.
Bayern Munich meanwhile, scored an emphatic 5-0 victory against a 10-man Anderlecht in Belgium.
Bayern’s goals against the Belgian team were scored by Hamit Altintop (9), Luca Toni (45), Lukas Podolski (57), Miroslav Klose (66) and Franck Ribery (85).
Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld started the game in Belgium without regular goalkeeper Oliver Kahn, who was given permission to stay in Munich and Germany international Klose and Ribery, who were on the bench.
Hitzfeld was not disappointed with the team that he picked though as they dominated throughout the game.
Altintop gave the visitors the ideal start as Toni laid off to Altintop in the ninth minute and the Turkish international unleashed a powerful shot from well outside the area that gave the goalkeeper no chance.
Anderlecht nearly equalised matters midway through the first half as Jan Polak hit the upright with a free kick.
The home side was reduced to ten men in the 42nd minute after Marcin Wasilewski was shown his second yellow card and sent for an early shower.
It took Bayern just two minutes to make their numerical advantage count as Luca Toni scored with a volley after a Philipp Lahm cross. The Italian striker received his third booking of the competition though and will miss next week’s return leg.
Bayern added another goal in the 57th minute after a counter-attack started by Franck Ribery. After running half the size of the pitch the French international played the ball to his left, where Podolski had a simple task scoring from close range.
Klose, who came on for Toni at halftime, scored Bayern’s fourth after Podolski managed to pull back a cross from an acute angle.
To add to Anderlecht’s misery, Ribery’s delicate free-kick five minutes from the end into the top right corner gave Bayern their emphatic victory.
In other matches Marseille beat Zenit St Petersburg 3-1, while Bolton Wanderers drew 1-1 with Sporting Lisbon.
