Washington : A commission from the Organization of American States (OAS) will travel to Ecuador on Sunday to investigate the conflict between this country and Colombia after the latter’s army violated Ecuadorian territory.
The mission will arrive in Quito, where they will meet with President Rafael Correa, who has favored the creation of a new OAS without the United States to solve the region’s problems in a fair and fast way.
We need an OAS made up of the countries of the region, “that is, an Organization of Latin American States,” said the head of State in a radio message to the Ecuadorian people.
Correa compared the rapid solution to the Ecuadorian-Colombian crisis at the 20th Rio Group Summit in Santo Domingo with the recent meeting of the OAS Permanent Council, which “has the great challenge of proving that it is good for something,” he said.
On Sunday, the OAS commission will visit Santa Rosa, where the Colombian army bombed and attacked a camp of the Colombian Revolutionary Armed Forces (FARC) on March 1.
Headed by OAS Secretary General Jose Miguel Insulza, the delegation will travel to Bogota on Tuesday, where they will meet with President Alvaro Uribe.
The mission also includes the incumbent president of the OAS Permanent Council, Bahaman Ambassador Cornelius Smith, and representatives Rodolfo Gil (Argentina), Osmar Chohfi (Brazil), Aristides Royo (Panama) and Maria Zavala (Peru), as well as a representative of Mexico, which currently holds the temporary presidency of the Rio Group.
