New Delhi : Left and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members clashed for the second successive day in parliament Tuesday, forcing adjournments of both houses.
The Lok Sabha was first adjourned at 12.25 p.m. after verbal clashes between MPs belonging to the Left parties and the BJP. Five minutes after the house reconvened at 12.35 p.m., it was adjourned again till 1.30 p.m.
Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee disallowed Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Basudeb Acharya from raising the issue of political violence in Kerala and Sunday’s attack on the CPI-M office here, saying that it was a state matter and could not be raised in the Lok Sabha.
But Acharya insisted on raising the issue, to which BJP and Shiv Sena members protested. Unable to control the situation, Chatterjee adjourned the house.
Earlier when the Lok Sabha met, Acharya gave notice for suspending the question hour but the speaker refused to take it up.
“I am appealing to you from the bottom of my heart, for the sake of this institution, remain on your seat and allow the house to function,” the speaker told the MPs who were trying to disrupt the proceedings.
The Rajya Sabha was adjourned for 10 minutes at 12.25 p.m. over the same issue.
The house witnessed uproarious scenes during zero hour after Brinda Karat (CPI-M) charged BJP leaders in Delhi with provoking and inciting their workers to attack Left cadres across the country.
“This is the kind of politics of violence and intolerance they (BJP leaders) are practising,” she said, provoking an outburst from BJP members.
Amidst shouts of “shame, shame” from the treasury benches, Karat said some BJP and Rashtriya SwayamSevak Sangh (RSS) workers had Monday night attempted to damage a CPI-M building in Hyderabad.
Senior BJP member M. Venkaiah Naidu countered by citing violence by Left cadres in Nandigarm in West Bengal and alleged that CPI-M workers had also killed a large number of people in Kerala.
As the din continued, the house was adjourned for five minutes.
