New Delhi : The Supreme Court Wednesday refused to advance the date set by Meghalaya Governor S.S. Sidhu for the new Congress government to prove its majority on the floor of the state assembly.
Congress leader D.D. Lapang was Monday sworn-in as chief minister even after a combine of parties led by P.A. Sangma, a former Lok Sabha speaker and leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), claimed the support of 31 members in the 60-seat legislature.
The governor had given 10 days to Lapang to prove his majority support. The Congress has 25 legislators.
Sangama’s son Conrad K. Sangama filed a petition in the apex court, questioning the governor’s decision to administer the oath to Lapang.
