Electricity woes dominate Madhya Pradesh assembly proceedings

Bhopal : The issue of power shortage continued to dominate proceedings in the Madhya Pradesh assembly for the second consecutive day Wednesday with the Congress lawmakers carrying lanterns to the house.

Uproarious scenes were witnessed when the treasury and opposition benches raised slogans against each other.

The trouble started during zero hour when the slogan shouting Congress legislators entered the well of the house holding lanterns in their hand to highlight the acute power crisis in the state.

When the speaker described the opposition’s conduct as “highly objectionable” and ruled that nothing would go on record, the Congress lawmakers returned to their seats.

The speaker assured he would allow Arif Aqueel of the Congress to speak on the incident of “setting ablaze the State Electricity Board office by the people at Berasia near the state capital Tuesday”.

Protests over erratic electricity supply during examinations took an ugly turn Tuesday evening, at Berasia village near the state capital, with hundreds of residents setting the electricity board office ablaze.

The fire was doused immediately and there was no major damage. “The people were enraged over longer-than-scheduled power cuts being experienced in the area for the past few days,” a board official said.

Later when Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan charged the opposition with disturbing the law and order situation under the pretext of protesting against erratic power supply, the Congress members staged a walkout.
