Flights normal at Mumbai; ground handling, aerobridges hit

By IANS

Mumbai : Flight operations were normal at Mumbai airport Wednesday, but ground handling and aerobridge services were hit on account of the nationwide strike called by Airport Authority of India (AAI) employees.

Some 2,500 AAI employees are participating in the strike at Mumbai but the airport has not been affected as it has been privatised.

An airport official said at 6 p.m. that employees of the Mumbai International Airport Pvt Ltd (MIAL) had finished their shifts and “at the present moment, there is nobody to man the aerobridges. We have deployed step ladders until the situation normalizes”.

Ground-handling services were also affected Wednesday evening.

At the sane time, the spokesman said flight operations are pretty normal.

“There have been a few delays of thirty minutes or so. But overall, flights are operating smoothly without any major disruptions,” he added.

MIAL claimed it has the resources to handle the strike for at least a week.

“Housekeeping is being outsourced, and for emergency services we have a reserve team to be deployed,” the official said.

MIAL had recently recruited a team of 60 people to be deployed for safety services.
