Bhopal : Upset over a warrant issued in the name of his mother in a power theft case, a youth in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior district committed suicide, the police said Wednesday.

Sunny, 16, son of Ram Bai, used to eke out a living by making idols while his mother and two sisters do household jobs. His father, Kalicharan Vishwakarma, had died several years ago.

Sunny hung himself Tuesday after a police head constable visited his place and told Ram Bai that an arrest warrant has been issued against her in a case of power theft.

“A head constable of Bahodapur police station has been approaching us for the last two days with a warrant in a case of power theft and threatening me and my son that I would be arrested. This terrorised Sunny so much that he ended his life,” Ram Bai alleged.

She also told the police that she had surrendered the power meter seven years ago to the Electricity Board and the department had also waived her power bill.

Irate over the incident, locals blocked traffic demanding financial assistance for Ram Bai. They said that she lost her son only because the head constable of Bahodapur police station had terrorised him by repeatedly showing the warrant against his mother.

They are also agitated over the heavy electricity bills amounting to Rs.20,000 to Rs.40,000 being sent to the residents.
