Leading human rights watchdog asks India, China and Nepal to release detained Tibetans

By NNN-PTI

Washington : A leading human rights watchdog has urged India, China and Nepal to release the detained Tibetans protestors, who attempted to observe the 49th anniversary of a failed uprising against Beijing’s rule in 1959, and permit them to demonstrate peacefully.

“Instead of arresting peaceful protesters, why don’t these governments meet with them and attempt to address their grievances?” Sophie Richardson, Asia advocacy director at Human Rights Watch, said in a statement.

About 100 Tibetan protesters, including women and nuns, were arrested in Dharamsala yesterday for defying the Centre’s ban on their march and attempting to cross over to Tibet.

Around 100 monks were arrested in Nepal while about 300 were arrested in Beijing over the past one week.

She said that peaceful demonstrations are protected under international and domestic laws and they should be permitted, not violently dispersed.

“We are witnessing the most visible wave of peaceful dissent against Chinese rule in the Tibetan capital for the past two decades,” Richardson said.
