Muslims leading unemployment in West Bengal

Kolkata: Unemployed Muslims constitute one-third (nearly 35%) of those registered with employment exchanges in the state but when it comes to getting jobs, the community accounts for only 3.3%.

This was disclosed by state Labour Minister Anadi Sahu in the Assembly on 12th March. Giving details, the minister told that 8,209 people got jobs through employment exchanges during the current financial year of which only 271 were Muslims. The total number of minority candidates getting the job was only 374; 86 Christians, 16 Buddhists and one Sikh.

The total number of registered unemployed in the state has fallen down to 57,21,016 persons by 31st December 2007 from the previous figure of 77,22,799 persons as on 31st March 2007.

Meanwhile, the government has begun deleting the names of those who have crossed the age limit of 45 years and those who have not renewed their registration.
