51st session for UN cmte to fight crimes, narcotics concluded

Vienna : The United Nations’ (UN) committee to combat narcotic drugs and crime concluded Friday its 51st session with the participation of several states including Kuwait.

The committee endorsed a number of plans and projects aimed at facing the threat of narcotics and the distribution of illegal drugs.

The committee also endorsed a draft law, submitted by Afghanistan, Iran, and Pakistan, regarding providing international aid against drug traffic in states neighboring Afghanistan.

An Arab draft law by the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Morocco, Yemen called on the committee to endorse international laws regarding tightening procedures against the recreational usage of some narcotics, like weed, in some states. The draft law was met with reservation by the Netherlands, New Zealand, and Switzerland.

Another draft resolution was submitted by Sudan and Egypt which also called for aiding states suffering from the drug trafficking. The 51st meetings began on Monday, discussing several steps to fight crime and narcotics.

Slovenia will hold the upcoming 52nd session for the committee on March 16th 2009.
