New Delhi: The Supreme Court on 14th March allowed an appeal against the Gujarat High Court’s order that had quashed Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s notification to shut meat shops for nine days during Mahavir Jayanti.

The bench comprising Justices H.K. Sema and Markandeya Katju, while giving the order, made a reference to Mughal Emperor Akbar. The bench said Akbar had abstained from meat eating for six months in a year in Gujarat. The court asked if he could do so, would it be unreasonable to abstain from meat for just nine days today?

The Court also said India is a secular country; therefore, everybody should respect each other’s religion and not do any such thing that would cause rift between the followers of any two religions.
