Lucknow : Flooded with complaints about innocent Muslims being implicated as “terrorists”, the Uttar Pradesh government has set up a one-man judicial commission to find out the truth.
According to an official spokesman, “retired district judge R.D. Nimesh has been named as the head of the commission”.
“At present, the commission has been assigned to probe the arrests of Mohammad Khalid Mujahid and Mohammad Tariq Kazmi, who were arrested by the police from Barabanki on Dec 22 in connection with the November serial blasts in Lucknow, Varansi and Faizabad,” the spokesman said.
Mujahid belongs to Jaunpur while Kazmi hails from Azamgarh. Both were closely associated with different Islamic seminaries.
Their arrests evoked sharp response from several Muslim quarters and a number of clerics and Islamic organisations made representations to the state government, alleging that the two were “framed”.
“With a view to ensuring a time-bound inquiry, the commission has been asked to submit its report within a period of six months after which the government would take a final decision,” said the spokesman.
