Crucial UPA-Left meet on n-deal underway

New Delhi : The ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and Left met Monday afternoon for a crucial round of discussion on the India-US nuclear deal.

“We are not expecting anything much from this meeting,” a senior Left leader said before going for the meet. He underlined that the Left would not change its stand on the deal.

The government was to brief the Left leaders on the negotiations that have taken place at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) about the India-specific safeguards – a necessary step to make the deal operational.

Left sources said it would not be possible for them to take a view on the negotiations that had gone on for a period of three months.

The Left had given a green light to the government to hold talks with the IAEA with the condition that the final draft of the pact would have to be approved by the 15-member UPA-Left panel.

Leaders of the four Left parties, which support the Manmohan Singh government from outside, met before going into the meeting with the UPA leadership.
