Sydney : India will not run the International Cricket Council (ICC) by proxy, says Inderjit Singh Bindra who has been elevated to the position of principal adviser to the world cricket governing body.
The move has been seen by some as a way of avoiding the appearance of an Indian hegemony developing within the council, particularly with the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, (BCCI) Sharad Pawar, to assume the ICC chairmanship in two years.
However, Bindra insisted the new management team would work effectively and fairly.
Bindra has formerly headed the BCCI, and sits on the board of the Indian Premier League.
“My role will be more to do with conceptualizing, helping with the direction of the ICC,” Bindra was quoted as saying in the Sydney Morning Herald.
“There will be clearly demarcated areas. I wish to maintain the sanctity of his office.”
Bindra was favoured to replace Malcolm Speed as ICC chief executive mid-year but decided that business and family commitments would prevent him from moving from Delhi to Dubai full-time.
Bindra will relinquish his position with the IPL but said he did see merit in the push for an annual IPL window in the international schedule.
