Dharmasala : Fearing more violence and anti-China protests in Tibet in the coming days, Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama said Thursday he was ready to talk to Chinese leaders.
“I am ready to go to Beijing for talks but only after a concrete plan was drawn up by both sides to reach a solution,” the Dalai Lama told reporters in this northern hill town where his government-in-exile is based.
“There is no point having talks without a concrete plan in advance,” he stressed.
“I am committed to removing negative feelings among Tibetans and also committed to removing distrust among Chinese,” he said.
Massive protests engulfed large parts of Lhasa and Tibet last week, challenging Beijing’s rule in the region. This has also sparked demonstrations by Tibetans living in exile in several countries, including India.
The Dalai Lama said more anti-China protests and violence could spread across Tibet and other places.
“More violence could spread in Tibet but I have no moral authority to stop the agitating Tibetans,” said the Tibetan leader, who fled his homeland in 1959 and lives in India along with some 100,000 Tibetan exiles.
“The problem in Tibet is due to the wrong policies of China.”
He said he stands for complete non-violence and had a word of caution for the agitating Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC), which is carrying out anti-China protests in India including a march to Tibet from here.
He called on the TYC to rethink about their actions.
On the allegations that he was behind the violence in Tibet, the Dalai Lama said: “How can that be possible? I am here in India as a refugee and as the longest guest of India.”
Clarifying his stand on his threat to resign a couple of days ago, he said he meant he would go into retirement but couldn’t step down from the position of the Dalai Lama “as this is pre-ordained by birth”.
