Kozhikode : Christians in Kerala observed Maundy Thursday and Muslims celebrated Milad-i-Sherif, the birthday of Prophet Mohammed.
Maundy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with apostles.
Thousands of Christians attended ceremonies at churches across the state. The ceremonies included washing the feet of 12 persons, representing the apostles of Christ whose feet Jesus washed in a display of humility.
Muslims in the state celebrated Milad-i-Sherif Thursday with enthusiasm. Meetings and colourful processions carrying messages of the Prophet marked the celebrations.
However, heavy summer downpour that lashed most parts of the state in the afternoon, affected the functions.
In Kerala, Muslims constitute 23 percent of the total population of 32 million, while Christian population is 22 percent.
