Greater Noida : A gritty Sunitha Rao overcame Indonesian Sandy Gumulya to book a semifinal berth in the $25,000 ITF women’s tennis tournament at the Jaypee Greens Sports Complex here Thursday.
The second – seed US -based Indian was a set down but then rallied to beat seventh seeded Gumulya 2-6, 6-2, 6-1.
Sunitha next faces third – seed Estonian Margit Ruutel who beat Thai Varatchaya Wongteanchai 6-4, 6-1.
In doubles, third- seed South Africans Kelly Anderson and Chanelle Scheepers beat Indonesians Yayuk Basuki and Romana Tedjakusama 6-4,5-7 (10-6) to set up a title clash with fourth – seed Teodora Mircic of Serbia and Slovak Lenka Tvaroskova. The duo outplayed Kazakhstan’s Ksenia Palkina and Russian Anastasia Poltoratskaya 6-3,2-6 (10-8).
