Islamabad : The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) held an orientation session for the new members of Pakistan’s National Assembly at the Parliament Lodges here on Thursday, the US embassy said.
The orientation is part of USAID’s $7.8 million Pakistan Legislative Strengthening Project, an embassy statement said.
“For more than three years, USAID has worked with the national and provincial assemblies and all parties to support efforts that give legislators the information they need to serve their constituents better,” USAID Pakistan Mission Director Anne Aarnes said while welcoming the newly elected members.
The orientation provided new assembly members with an overview of the National Assembly, including rules of parliamentary procedure and the committee system.
It is part of a larger in-depth training program that strengthens members’ law drafting and budgetary review skills.
Implemented by Development Alternatives Inc. (DAI), USAID’s Pakistan Legislative Strengthening Project is part of $1.5 billion in aid the US Government is providing to Pakistan over a five-year period to improve economic growth, education, health, and governance and to reconstruct areas affected by the October 2005 earthquake.
