Curfews amid Iraq Violence, Threats

By Prensa Latina

Baghdad : The Iraqi government imposed curfews in various areas of this country this morning in a bid to avoid new violent actions and civil disobedience after fighting in the southern city of Basra.

According to Al Jazeera TV, the Tuesday clashes between the Mahdi Army, loyal to clergyman Moqtada al Sader, and the security forces not only occurred in Basra, but also spread to other Iraqi cities, included Baghdad.

Al Jazeera news said that at least 25 persons died in those clashes and added that the resistance launched missiles against the fortified Green Zone in Baghdad, in which the US embassy is found.

Police reported today 10 dead and 80 wounded in the Baghdad neighborhood of Sader City, in which there was fierce fighting between the Mahdi Army and government forces.

On Tuesday, Moqtada Al Sader called the population to carry out protests against the government operations and threatened with civil disobedience if attacks against Mahdi militants continue.
