Chandigarh : India and Pakistan Wednesday sought to find solution to the illegal cross-border drug trade even as the Pakistan Rangers denied that trafficking was taking place only from the Pakistani soil.
An 18-member delegation of the Pakistan Rangers, led by their director general Major General Haroon Aslam, arrived in India through the Wagah-Attari border near Amritsar for the bi-annual meeting with the Border Security Force (BSF) here.
The three-day meeting between the Rangers and BSF officials started here Wednesday. The BSF side is being led by Special Director General of police (DGP) G.S. Gill.
The Rangers’ delegation leader denied that drug trafficking was only taking place along the Afghanistan-Pakistan route into India.
“We do not agree with this. This is only one side of the story. But we are here to discuss the problem and find a solution. We are not here to hurl accusations at each other,” Aslam said at the Attari border as his delegation headed to Chandigarh, 270 km away.
Aslam said narcotics trade was a problem for both the sides and a solution to deal with it was required.
Other issues likely to be discussed at the meeting include joint patrolling, infiltration, border constructions, inadvertent crossings and smuggling.
