Dharamsala : The Tibetan government-in-exile here Wednesday released the names of 40 people killed in anti-China protests in Tibet in the past fortnight, and put the toll so far at 140.
“While the latest death toll in Tibet is around 140, we are releasing the names and details of 40 identified persons,” the spokesman of the Tibetan government-in-exile said.
The list of the victims provides their names and addresses along with the date and place of their death.
Twenty-two people, including seven women, lost their lives March 14, while a total of 18 others died March 15, 16, 18 and 23, according to the list.
“It is extremely difficult to get complete details due to restrictions imposed by Chinese authorities since March 10 when the anti-China demonstrations began,” the spokesman said.
“Even though we know a Tibetan has been killed, we often do not know the place of his origin and other details,” he added.
“Many of the bodies are being turned to ‘People’s Procuratorates’ (state run legal supervisory organs) instead of being returned to their families. This makes it difficult to gather details of the dead,” he added.
The anti-China protests gathered momentum after Tibet’s 49th uprising day March 10.
While the Tibetan government-in-exile says 140 Tibetans have lost their lives in Tibet, the Chinese government puts the toll at 22.
