Islamabad : At least seven people were killed when unidentified gunmen opened fire on an ambulance in northwestern Pakistan Thursday, TV channel Dawn News reported.
The incident took place in Toor Ghara area of Kurram agency in the northwestern tribal areas, said the report.
Seven people including four women were killed in the incident.
However, there was no immediate official confirmation of the deaths.
As an ally of the US in its war on terror, Pakistan has been fighting local militants in its northwestern frontier, especially the tribal belt. Attacks targeting security forces have occurred frequently there.
The visiting US Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte and Assistant Secretary of State Richard Boucher visited North West Frontier Province and held talks with some tribal elders Wednesday, The News daily reported.
A group of 11 tribal elders told the US officials that the centuries-old jirga system was still effective and only dialogue through it could end militancy.
The country’s new Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani Wednesday during a meeting with the US officials said his government was determined to fight terrorism politically, economically and strategically.
