Kanpur : The Congress Sunday blamed Uttar Pradesh’s ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) for “lawlessness” in the state and accused Chief Minister Mayawati doing little to rein in corruption.
The two-day meet of the state executive that commenced here Sunday will be addressed by party president Sonia Gandhi and her general secretary son Rahul Gandhi Monday, when they would also hold a public rally in this industrial hub of Uttar Pradesh.
The meet, being held after a gap of 26 years, began with party bigwigs training their guns on the BSP as well as the opposition Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) even as Rita Bahuguna Joshi, the party’s state president, in her address said the Congress would go to polls alone.
In a political resolution adopted here, Congress said: “Both Samajwadi Party and BSP were responsible for the increasing lawlessness in the state. If Samajwadi Party extended patronage to criminals and Mafiosi, BSP too was no different.”
“People of the state were still living under the shadow of terror.”
While the resolution extended full support to inclusion of 17 most backward communities in the Scheduled Castes list, it also sought to throw the bait at minorities by assuring them that the party was always committed to ensuring their well being.
“The BSP government is soft and has been encouraging the mafias to join its rank and files. The Congress expressing grave concern over the lawlessness asked the BSP to fulfil the promises of giving people a responsible and sensitive government,” it added.
Commenting on Chief Minister Mayawati, the resolution said: “Her track record shows that corruption only grows under her regime. She still stands accused of (having) disproportionate assets and (in) the Taj corridor case. The Ganga Expressway is another scam in the making for the way contracts were awarded to a few select.”
The party favoured further division of this most populous state and accused Mayawati of indulging in petty politics on this issue. The BSP government must honour the popular sentiments for separate Bundelkhand, Pashchimanchal and Bundelkhand states, it said.
