Gurgaon : Delhi Police’s ace sharpshooter Rajbir Singh was killed with a missing police revolver lost during a raid last year as part of a premeditated conspiracy, police said Sunday.
“The weapon used for killing (Rajbir Singh) was the service revolver of Hisar’s additional superintendent of police (ASP), which he lost during a raid last year,” Gurgaon Police Commissioner Mohinder Lal told reporters here.
ASP Ashok Shoran had lodged an FIR in this regard July 21, 2007 in Bhiwani. According to the FIR No. 103, the weapon was lost during a raid in the fields of Dadri in Hisar, he said.
The Gurgaon police are now investigating how the revolver reached Vijay Bhardwaj, the property dealer and Singh’s 20-year-old friend, who has confessed of the murder.
Bhardwaj, 42, now in the custody of the Gurgaon police, in his confessional statement said he fired two bullets at Singh’s head with a .32 bore revolver on the night of March 24. However, he said that Singh had given him the weapon three days earlier.
One of Delhi’s best known and most controversial officers, Singh, 48, was known as an “encounter specialist” – a euphemism for a cop who tracks down and kills suspected gangsters and terrorists without due process of law.
“We are probing how many hands did the weapon change before making it to Vijay Bhardwaj. We have spoken to few Delhi Police officials Saturday to find out the way through which the weapon reached Bhardwaj,” Lal said.
