Triple century to boost Sehwag’s comeback in ODIs

New Delhi : Virender Sehwag’s triple century in Chennai Test must have boosted his confidence, but the swashbuckling opener feels that there is still some mental block, when it comes to one-day games.

Sehwag made a remarkable comeback in Tests, scoring 319 against South Africa in Chennai last week. But in the recent past his ODI form has been scratchy, scoring just 81 runs in the five matches, he played in Australia. His best was 33 against Sri Lanka in Brisbane.

After his awful outing in the first five matches in Australia, Sehwag was left out of the team and media speculated the reason behind his omission as injury, which he rejected.

“I was not injured, I was fit but I was not picked up in the side for the rest of the series. There is nothing in between seniors and juniors in the team. We all support and trust each other. These things are just media speculations,” Sehwag, who is the captain of Delhi Daredevils, told reporters here Monday.

“In ODIs, I am too positive in and that sometimes brings out mistakes, which eventually leads to my downfall. But from now onwards, I will try to bat like Test cricket in ODIs,” he said.

The Daredevils unveiled Bollywood star Akshay Kumar as their brand ambassador, besides launching the red and black team jersey and website – www.delhidaredevils.com.

Asked about the dead Chennai track on which he thrashed South African bowlers to all parts of the ground, Sehwag said: “Individual performances matter in team efforts. However flat may be the track, but for a batsman it’s very hard to make runs in Test cricket.”

“Everybody said Chennai track is a batting paradise. but nobody noticed Harbhajan’s eight wicket in the match,” he added.

Asked about the Daredevils’ goal in the inaugural IPL tournament starting in Bangalore April 18, Sehwag said: “Our team’s target is to win the inaugural IPL championship and as a batsman and captain of the side my personal target is to perform consistently in the tournament and lead the team from forward.”

Asked whether the game needs Bollywood’s involvement, Sehwag said: “Bollywood has a different place and cricket is different. Twenty20 is pure entertainment and Bollywood’s involvement will add more spice for the spectators.”
