Bangladesh prepares to meet Cyclone Nargis

By IANS,

Dhaka : Bangladesh alerted its entire coastline on the Bay of Bengal as tropical cyclone ‘Nargis’, stationary some 1,000 km away, showed signs of moving towards Myanmar.

The government and Met office experts were, however, not willing to take a chance, New Age newspaper said Friday.

Chief Advisor Fakhruddin Ahmed chaired a meeting to review the preparations even as Met officials said they could not predict the direction the cyclone could take by the end of this week.

Meteorologist Nazrul Islam said it was too early to predict the course of the cyclone that at present indicated it might make landfall near Teknaf-Akyab on the Bangladesh-Myanmar riverine border.

The government has alerted all its ports, asked fishermen to return and activated its disaster management facilities including the cyclone shelters.

Disaster-prone Bangladesh is still recovering from the ravages of cyclone ‘Sidr’ November last year which killed 3,000 people and destroyed crops and cattle over one million hectares of land.
