Meghna, Arjun lead in Parsvnath chess

New Delhi : Commonwealth gold medallist and second seed Meghna C.H. of Kerala took sole lead with five points from as many rounds in the ongoing Parsvnath 22nd National Under-9 Girls Chess Championship here Friday.

Playing black side of the Queen’s Gambit Exchange variation, Meghna overcame overnight joint leader Gauri Keshav Hadkonkar of Goa in 53 moves at the Bapu Samaj Seva Kendra here. Third seed Riya Savant of Goa is trailing behind the leader with four and half points. She beat another overnight leader Manjula R. of Tamil Nadu in 62 moves.

In the boys section, top seed Arjun Bharat of Karnataka along with state mate R.U. Anantharam and Arvind M. of Tamil Nadu leads the table with five points after fifth round matches.

Arjun beat Aadithyaa M. of Tamil Nadu in Nimzo Indian Defence after 37 moves. Anantharam overcame local star and fifth seed Harshal Shahi, and Arvind defeated Poras Sanjay Kolgane of Maharashtra. Second seed Hetual Shah of Gujarat and Anirudh V. Bhat of Goa split the point in the fifth round and they are now trailing behind the leaders with four and half points.
