Women activists breach high security zone outside Parliament

By IANS,

New Delhi : About 50 women activists, led by the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) and other organisations, Monday breached high security and agitated for 40 minutes outside the main gate of Parliament demanding enactment of the bill envisaging 33 per cent reservation for women in legislatures.

The activists were later detained and whisked away in police vans.

Carrying banners and placards, the activists managed to reach the main entrance of the Parliament House where they shouted slogans and urged the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government to immediately table the women’s reservation bill which has been pending for 12 years.

“The government should immediately table the bill for discussion,” said Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) MP Subhashini Ali.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has said his government will bring the bill within this very session which has only four more days to go.
