Jammu : Jammu and Kashmir assembly Speaker Tara Chand Wednesday launched a counter-offensive against Congress MP Madan Lal Sharma, who had alleged his involvement in a sex scam, and described the allegation as “absolute lies” and a result of “political frustration”.
“Their (detractors’) thousand lies will get demolished by one truth and that truth is that they tried to malign me because of their political frustration,” Tara Chand, also from the Congress, told a public meeting in his assembly constituency of Khour near the border with Pakistan.
Tara Chand told the cheering crowd that the Congress party had answered. “I’ve been vindicated that I am innocent and those who sought to damage my reputation have to explain why they levelled false charges against me.”
It was at a public meeting in Khour Sunday that Sharma, who represents the Jammu parliamentary constituency, had alleged that Tara Chand and former state Congress chief Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed were involved in a sex scandal that made headlines last year. He said the two were saved only after Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s intervention.
“Had we not sought pardon for these two, they would have been behind bars and the Congress would have faced embarrassment,” he had said.
Though he retracted his comments a day later, the Congress leadership slapped on him a show-cause notice asking him to explain his remarks within a week.
