Jammu : Militants struck the plains of Jammu after a gap of six years, killing one person and injuring three others early Sunday, leading to a gunfight with security forces in the Samba sector, 45 km from here.
According to the police, militants shot dead Hoshiar Singh and critically injured his wife Shashi Bala of Keli Mandi in Samba. Police and army units in the area, alerted by the gun shots, ran towards the area and engaged the militants in a gun battle in which two were injured.
The militants are said to be hiding in a house.
Inspector General of Police (Jammu zone) K. Rajendra told IANS: “An encounter has started and it is a big gun battle.”
Rajendra suspects that the militants might be a group that had crossed into Samba sector from Pakistan Thursday night.
“They might have been lying low as there were ambushes laid in the area. But villagers must have spotted them this morning and then they must have opened fire.”
This is the first incident of a militant attack in the plains of Jammu since 2002.
The injured have been shifted to Government Medical College Hospital, Jammu, police said.
