Police fire kills two civilians in Afghanistan

Kabul : The US troops killing several militants during a search operation in eastern Afghanistan, while locals blamed the troops for killing civilians and staged a protest demonstration in the same zone on Saturday.

The protest demonstration was staged in the province of Nangarhar where the angry protestors blocked the 75-kilometre Torkham-Jalalabad Highway for all kinds of traffic to register their protest.

Police tried to convince the demonstrators to open the road however, they were adamant.
Following a squabble with some of the protestors, the policemen opened fire at them killing at least two and injuring six more civilians, said residents.

Earlier, the Afghan officials and the US troops said they had killed several militants in a search operation in Shinwar district of Nangarhar province.

A statement from coalition forces’ Bagram base said the operation was conducted on Friday night. The troops came under fire while searching compounds. They retaliated and killed several of the attackers.

The Interior Ministry in Kabul says they were investigating the claim by residents that only civilians were killed in the operation. The US troops so far did not come out with fresh comments.
