Bhubaneswar : Police claim to have busted a food adulteration racket in Orissa’s southern city of Berhampur and arrested at least two people, an official said Sunday.

Following a tip-off Saturday, a team raided a house in Berhampur, some 100 km from here. “A huge quantity of various adulterated food items including baby food, ghee, tea, butter, and edible oil was found,” a district police official told IANS.

The racketeers were using mixers, grinding machines and sewing machines to produce adulterated food items. They would put the names of branded companies on the fake items. The products seized would be worth Rs.2 million, he said.

Police have arrested P. Nageswar, the unit owner, and one of his associates. Search is on to nab others who are involved in it.

In July last year, police busted a fake medicine manufacturing unit in state’s Bolangir district. The kingpin of the unit, Shankar Agarwal, who was arrested, admitted to manufacturing fake allopathic, ayurvedic and homeopathic medicines.
