Amritsar : An official who had Monday conducted panchayati raj institution (PRI) elections in Punjab was found hanging from a tree in a village in the border district of Tarn Taran Wednesday.
The body of Sukhdev Singh, who was the presiding officer for the PRI elections in a village in Tarn Taran, was spotted by villagers who informed the police.
Sukhdev Singh was found hanging from a tree barely two km from the office where he had deposited the ballot boxes of the polling booth Monday evening.
He mysteriously disappeared after depositing the ballot boxes and did not even submit his report to the concerned officials after the poll, a police official said.
His relatives told the police that Singh last called his nephew Monday evening and said that he was returning to Amritsar. But Singh failed to reach home and his family said that his mobile phone was switched off.
Tarn Taran district witnessed violence before and during the polling, but no incidents took place near Singh’s polling booth, the official said.
The police said that investigation has been launched into his disappearance and mysterious death.
Singh’s relatives suspect foul play.
