Kabul : An explosive remnant of war blasted and wounded 17 children and one adult in Valgan, north Afghanistan.
The blast occurred when the children tried to trade what they considered scrap metal for ice cream, says a source from the hospital that assisted the victims.
Statistics from the UN Action Center against Mines ranks Afghanistan among the top landmine-riddled countries. It reported over 600 fatalities from mines and other explosive remnants of war in 2007.
Meanwhile, the Pentagon said the US troops killed 12 alleged Afghani insurgents in Helmand, south Afghanistan, during an operation in Garmser district to stop arms supply to the rebels.
During the operation, a group of alleged rebels ambushed the troops that fired back with light weaponry and called for back up from the aviation, yet the report omits the number of deaths and wounded.
