Kolkata : With CPI-M patriarch Jyoti Basu acknowledging “cracks” in West Bengal’s three decades-old ruling Left Front, the party in a fire fighting effort said it would sort out the differences through discussions.
Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) state secretary Biman Bose said Friday that constituents of the Left Front had been requested not to make disparaging comments about one another to avoid misunderstandings during the panchayat polls.
“We have requested all Left Front constituents not to make any adverse comment against each other and will sort out the differences through discussions,” Bose told reporters on the sidelines of a press conference at Alimuddin Street – the CPI-M headquarters here.
The incident of crude bombs being thrown at Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) leader and Irrigation Minister Subhas Naskar’s village residence, killing his nephew’s wife at Basanti in South 24-Parganas district of Bengal, has “worsened the relationship between the CPI-M and RSP” – the two constituents of the Left Front. “It’s high time that we wipe out internal clashes,” he said.
Earlier, former chief minister Jyoti Basu said here Thursday: “The first phase of the three-phased panchayat polls was conducted peacefully. But from the extent of violence reported in the second phase, our party as well as others should learn a lesson and avoid its rerun in the third phase of polls on Sunday.”
“In the wake of criticism of our policies, we realised that the disunity over seat-sharing would be worse this polls. Discussions on this issue with the RSP and Forward Bloc failed despite Biman Bose’s efforts,” Basu said.
“It’s high time to repair the cracks and build the Left Front afresh,” Basu added.
